Former executive claims she was fired from Oprah Winfrey’s television network because she was pregnant
Oprah Winfrey’s cable network is being sued for sex and disability discrimination by the company’s former senior director of Scheduling and Acquisitions.
Carolyn Hommel claims the company refused to pay her vacation time as well as overlooking her for a promotion to Vice President at the company because she was pregnant.
In the suit, Hommel claims she suffered from ‘acts of oppression, fraud, or malice’ from OWN and Michael Scott Garner, the network’s SVP of Planning Scheduling and Acquisitions.
‘Hommel suffered and will continue to suffer damages in terms of lost wages, lost bonuses, lost benefits, and other pecuniary loss according to proof Hommel has also suffered and will continue to suffer anxiety, worry, embarrassment, humiliation, mental anguish, and severe emotional distress,” according to the 19-page suit.
Hommel, who filed in LA Superior Court on Friday, is seeking a jury trial, Deadline reported.
Hommel claims she was released from OWN in a March 2012 restructuring while on medical leave related to her pregnancy.
She further alleged that while she was encouraged to apply to the VP position being added to her former department she was never given the job.
Instead, the job went to Whitney Holland, a contract employee who was hired to cover her work during he pregnancy.
‘Hommel was qualified for the vice president position, but Defendants hired a non-pregnant individual who did not suffer from medical conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth,’ alleges her complaint.
She’s seeking general and special damages, punitive and liquidated damages, legal fees, and interest as well as statutory and civil penalties as well as ‘further relief as the Court deems just and proper.’
She is represented by Michael Bononi and Christy Granieri of Bononi Law Group
